Subject: Re: Nicknames - Bassano del Grappa |
Hi all,
Ira, your knowledge of Italian grammar is correct, but the name of the town is not originated by grappa, the tasty spirit helping to fight the cold winter days, either plain or poured into your black coffee, but from the mountain overlooking the town, Monte Grappa (male noun), which was a bloodied battlefield during First World War. After the victory it became a "sacred" place for Italian history and the town was renamed to remember the place in history of the site. Well, I guess the nickname could have originated from the alcoholic beverage as well, considering the huge amount of grappa drinked all year round in those areas.... Bye, Paolo Trieste, Italy |
