We have a Fulton travel umbrella (Appt. to Her Majesty) that we bought years ago - folds up to 8" but it's way, way too heavy. One should most definitely consider all that weight. Cost a lot too, so we keep schlepping it along. Think I'd agree with Michael - we're way too concerned with rain. We wouldn't replace this when we finally lose it.

We do carry two garbage-bag type rain ponchos that fold into a tiny bag - came in handy during a torrential downpour in Lake Louise last year. Hope we all have sunny skies.........
