I travel on a British passport so have it with me on all trips. The question was asked on behalf of my son who has not only let his passport lapse but can't even find his birth certificate! So I guess he has to forgo the wonderful business opportunity he was presented with at the last minute. Being a mother never ends, he is 35 years old.

It is an interesting question though because nobody seems to know the real situation and customs officers may have a certain amount of leeway. As everyone says, best to be safe than sorry and carry the passport.
