Cynthia,

Your boss was not a savvy traveller. There are all kinds of places to eat that don't cost $100 for lunch. When I was last there, I wasn't even spending $100 per day for everything.

For a first-timer, I like the Rick Steves' guidebooks. He recommends modest places to eat and stay that are still good. He also helps you hit the 'highlights' that most first-timers like to see.

Another source of hotels for the major cities is http://www.eurocheapo.com

At the lower end of the price range expect smaller rooms, small bathrooms and minimal decor. I stayed at the Amstel Botel which is right outside Central Station.

I prefer to travel on the cheap so that I can do it more often.
