I know that you will enjoy your trip to Iran. We did an independent trip a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. I am sure that you will be very surprised. Our travel was by train and local buses, which were both very comfortable and inexpensive. We found good shopping. Hotels were all modern, with western facilities. Instead of using the normal headscarf, buy youself one of the sewn scarfs that the local woman wear, they stay on the head much better.
