St. Jean de Luz is the nicest town I know of in that part of France. Biarritz, where we've stayed several times is much bigger, and not so pretty, but it has some great beaches, though they do get very crowded in the summer and during school holidays.
For a day trip, assuming you have a car, you can easily drive to Bilbao, Spain, and visit the Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank Gehry. It's absolutely stunning and worth the two hour drive.
