Yes it's a pilgrimage town all right. As soon as you walk out of it on the Chemin St Jacques you are puffing up one of the steepest hills you will meet in France or Spain. We actually did the Spanish part (Camino de Santiago) two years before the Chemin St Jacques - of course you should begin in France if you have time.

We liked both very much but they are quite different and the French part is definitely tougher - much less crowded too.
