I usually order the Islamic or Jewish meals on the flight. With one exception I have always been glad I have done that. The one exception was on Hawaiian airlines. My Islamic meal was decent, but their regular meals looked a bit better. Generally the food with the special order meals are usually quite predictable - nothing flashy but decent quality.

It is my experience that I get food that is less ethnically specific if I order the Islamic meal rather than the Jewish one.
