Hi, Lucy...
I improve my travel experience by immersing myself in the area we're traveling to. I read travel books and novels set in the area and watch movies set in that area. For example, before we went to New York, I ordered the whole series of Brooklyn South, watched You've Got Mail and When Harry Met Sally, among others. My husband joked that that's all we watched -- movies set in New York :-) Before going to Paris, we watch French films to help us with our French, and I read several different guidebooks. My husband and I took a conversational French class at the local junior college, which was a lot of fun. Not only that, our instructor brought in French food... Tarte Tatin and Crêpes, for example. I like listening to French radio on the internet or listening to French music. Next, we're planning a trip to San Francisco, and having never been there, I've set out to learn as much as I can about it. I'll be starting with TheTravelzine archives. Not learning about the area before we go there is, to me, wasted time, and the planning before hand is half the fun :-) Best, Sandy in Illinois |
