We are now thinking of adding on a stop to Buenos Aires either before or after Brazil, but are trying to find a way to get from Rio To Buenos Aires, or vice versa, other than by plane.

Googling hasn't revealed any info about trains between the cities; is there service from one city to the other?

What about buses? Are the roads suitable for bus travel?
