I can highly recommend the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Northern Wisconsin for fall color. The peak is usually the first week in October but there are websites and tourist offices to check for peak times. There are many waterfalls, lakes, Mackinac Island--this is usually the last weekend for the Grand Hotel--Lake Superior, Tequamenon Falls near Sault St. Marie.
Near the Wisconsin border is another fabulous waterfall called Bond Falls. If you are looking for a rural experience, this area is very beautiful in the fall.
