My husband and I travelled on both the Indian Pacific, from Perth to Adelaide, and the Ghan, from Adelaide to Perth, about four years ago. We both invested in VIP Backpackers' cards, which entitled us to big discounts on the tickets. We booked a compartment for the Indian Pacific trip, but sat up overnight on the Ghan. We enjoyed both trips, although the Indian Pacific was quite noisy at night, and I did not find it as comfortable as travelling 2nd class AC in India.
