Subject: Re: Guatemala Maya safety
John and fellow Ziners,

Yes our trip is ambitious! We hope to travel in Guatemala for 3 weeks. The Maya civilization has been an interest of ours for years. Last year renting a car and visiting all of the ruin sites, (and Teotihuacan) has always been a dream for us. Guatemala will cap our Maya adventure.

Of course safety is always a prime concern for us, especially as independent travelers. One must be concered... but not immobilized. In my opinion, information is the key and that is why I investigate a destination so extensively. We have traveled all over Mexico, Europe, USA, Canada and even China.... and always independently, (and so far safely). Information from ALL sources is important, especially information from other travelers who don't have "a dollar to make or an Axe to grind".

We are thinking of flying straight from San Francisco to Guatemala City. I see you're from San Diego (I grew up in Spring Valley). Where are you flying into? How long is your trip planned for? Which river trip are you considering? What is your primary means of transportation?

As I stated before...please keep good notes and post a travelogue upon your return. Your experiences can enlighten others about Guatemala.
