Hi Jan and Ziners,
Being a zoo lover, I must put in a good word for one of the best zoos in the U.S. It is the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, NE, about fifty miles northeast of Lincoln. I have been to the Toronto Zoo several times, as well as the San Diego Zoo in CA and the Bronx Zoo in NY. I can tell you that a visit to the Henry Doorly is a must. There are desert habitat exhibits enclosed in the largest geodesic dome in the world. Also under the dome is the Kingdoms of the Night with walk-through caves and an indoor swamp. The Lied Jungle takes you through African, South American and Asian rain forests. The aquarium includes a walk-through shark tunnel and a giant octopus. The new orangutan forest has just been completed. I'm hoping they will build a new cat complex next, as the tigers are still in cages. Of course, there are many plains animals outdoors and there is a dairy farm too. After the zoo closes, there is some great dining and shopping in the Omaha Old Market. And if you still have energy left, there's gambling at the Ameristar Casino Hotel, just across the Missouri River in Council Bluffs, IA. Carrie, Bardonia, NY |
