I was in Carmel a looong time a ago but always remember the Highlands Inn, a wonderful inn on top of a hill. Great views. Superb service. They lit the fireplace for us every night and, if requested, would fill our huge whirpool by the time arranged. Has a terrific restaurant called Pacific's Edge (I think) a wall of glass allows you to see the crashing waves below.
