My 24 year old son is considering spending a week in Budapest in March. He has found a good fare on Malev, the Hungarian airline, and plans to stay in a hostel. He knows that it will probably be cold at that time, but he grew up in upstate NY and cold is not an issue for him.

Does anyone have any experiences with hostels -- or really cheap hotels -- in Hungary? Also, are there any day trips that he might want to take by train? Inexpensive restaurant recommendations? Any tips at all would be welcome.
