I've seen the Falkirk Wheel in action two years ago and it's a truly amazing experience. The wheel moves only at fixed times, so you spend the time between looking at the big wheels and levers, trying to understand how it works. On a summer day it was packed with people watching, as they've made it an attraction with bike and boat rental, a large playground for kids, an exhibition and shop/cafe. There are tours on passenger boats where you basically are lifted on top, navigate through a loop and go down again, but there were long lines and they were expensive (like almost any kind of tour in UK). Photographs don't really do justice to the moving show, probably a movie camera would be better.
