Hello Ziners --
I can't resist weighing in on the Venice Hotel subject. My husband and I were there in March 2004 and stayed at the Hotel St.Elena http://www.hotelsantelena.com/eng/albergo.htm It's on the island of St. Elena between the Biennale and the Naval academy. St. Elena is actually park -like, quiet and untouristy. It's at the eastern edge of Venice, about a 20 minute walk to St. Marks. It's also an easy vaporetto ride to the outer islands. There is a vaporetto stop only 150 meters from the hotel -- with no bridges to drag the luggage across. The hotel is a converted convent with large, tastefully decorated modern rooms and a large, landscaped central courtyard. We found the staff to be most helpful. One caveat -- there are not a lot of restaurants right in the immediate area. We never found it a problem because we liked the few small restaurants that were near by and it was also easy to catch a meal slightly further afield.
