It looks like I'm heading to England and Scotland in April.

I used to use ATM and Visa for almost all purchases, but I understand nearly all cards now charge a fee over and above the 1% Visa charges for conversion from US dollars.

Are people switching back to traveller's checks, or just pay the conversion fee for convenience? Is the conversion rate from Visa better than you can get converting traveller's checks?
