We're going to be in Rome (return visit) at the end of March. I'd live to visit both Villa Adriana (Hadrian's) and Villa d'Este. We don't really want to do a tour, but I keep reading they're a pain to get to. We're OK with the Metro and buses, and I've read directions for getting to each from Rome. But I don't want to spend lots of time and energy just getting between the two villas then back to Rome. Hoping some of you Rome experts can tell me the best transportation strategy for planning a day trip to visit both.
