I got wonderful children's books with beautiful illustrations and unique stories in NZ for our grands. I remember finding several of them at the Waitakere Center near Auckland.

This is probably more for adults or older teenagers, but the very best gifts I got were possum fur socks. Possums (not the kind we have here) are a huge problem in NZ and eat thousands of trees a day. They have started making all kinds of items from the possum fur mixed with merino wool--socks, gloves, mittens, scarves, sweaters, pasties--. The socks are the softest, warmest, driest ever. I LOVE mine and the ones I got for gifts are still getting raves.
