My husband and I were in India in 2003/2004 and found plenty of ATM's in Bangalore. We also found them in the smaller towns we visited (Calicut and Kalpetta). However, I would advise you to take some travellers' cheques with you, although these can only be cashed in certain banks. I think the only place you might have trouble finding an ATM would be Periyar, but I have not been there so am not familiar with the place. Most mid-range hotels and restaurants also take credit cards. If you have any further questions you are most welcome to email me.
