Sydney is a big city so you will have to rely on your feet or public transportation. We stayed in the Kings Cross area which has a subway stop in its midst so it's convenient. I found the Rocks area to be very touristy (very chi chi) and not a place that I would want to stay.

Kings Cross has loads of restaurants. We were told to "watch ourselves" but we had no problems. Zine Sydneysiders may want to chime in here.

Visit the Sydney Zoo - take the ferry from the The Rocks and get a wonderful view of the bridge. The zoo is a great place to spend a few hours and probably the only place you'll see a cassowary.
