My husband and I stayed in Meissen for several nights some years ago. The train ride to Dresden from Meissen as I remember it was only about half an hour and there were frequent trains. We visited the porcelain factory on our last day; it is a bit out of the town, but Meissen is quite small and we were able to walk there. we didn't make a reservation for any tour.

We thought Meissen was a real gem and enjoyed walking around the town. We also visited the cathedral and castle on the hill, but I can't remember any other specific site.
