Several years ago we wanted to spend our last night in Italy away from the airport. So we did and thought we left in plenty of time to catch our flight. We were only about 30 miles from the airport. However we got caught in the morning traffic, missed one exit, spent a frantic time trying to get back on the right road, and finally driving like crazy just barely made it to the airport. Of course we then had to turn in the rental car. It was just a nightmare. So we have decided that we are of an age where we just don't want to do that. I would stay in the Rome airport and maybe take a train into Rome for a good meal.
