Mark May's suggestions are all on the money but we wanted to add one more. The Shangri-la on Ocean Ave,in Santa Monica, a great art deco boutique hotel.,is one we suggest. We had friends from Italy stay there and they were happy. Very close to shops, theaters, etc. on 3rd St. mall. Also, near the new Grove, Farmer's Market and LACMA there is an upscale motel called "The Farmer's Daughter". Very well situated, Both great for walking to everything.
