Glad to hear you'll be exploring the Languedoc during your vacation. A couple of years ago we bought a house in the little seaside village of Vias, about an hour south of Carcassonne, and have really enjoyed getting to know the area.

I had immediately thought of suggesting that locale, knowing that your son would love the adventure of Carcassonne, but didn't think you were considering it.

The amazing Roman aqueduct, the Pont du Gard, is also in the region - I think your son would enjoy seeing that too.

And the Canal du Midi, which goes right through the commune of Vias as it connects the Med to the Atlantic, is fun to walk or bike along. Not sure if boat rides will be running in April.
