Actually, this isn't directly about the Crypto-Jews in Belmonte, but I saw all your comments just after I read an article in the Canadian Jewish News by Richard Zimler. He is an author who was born in the USA but now lives in Porto, Portugal and teaches at the University of Porto. He has written a series of period novels that relate to the converted "New Christians" at the time of the inquisition. The first one is titled The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon - it sounds like an interesting historical novel and I have just requested it from the library.
