I second your disgust, Sue, with allowing people to use their cell phones on flights. I can remember being on a catamaran on my way to Tangiers, a few years ago. One woman passenger spent the whole hour and a half shouting into her cell phone. She spoke (shouted) Spanish and although we didn't understand a word she said, still, my travel buddies and I found it most disturbing to be subjected to that 'noise' Somehow, I can't imagine what it might be like on a 7 hour flight to Europe with most people on board shouting into their phones. Used for emergency purposes-- I have no problem. Otherwise, it would be utter chaos, I think!!!
